Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet Essays Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet Paper Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet Paper In this play Romeo and Juliet I am going to be analysing the way in which the key themes of love and hate are used within the play; focus in particular on the way they are used in Act 3 Scene 1 with reference to events, language and staging.The background of the play Romeo and Juliet is set in one of the romantic places in the world, Verona in Italy. This setting is brilliant as it is based on an earlier romantic poem from Italy written in the 14th century. Also Verona like many places has a violent part to it where the Capulets and the Montagues fight. William Shakespeare also uses a lot of sexual references in the play which might indicate that most of our swear words and sexual references came from William Shakespeares plays.The summary of the play Romeo and Juliet is that in the play the Capulets and the Montagues have yet another fight in an ongoing feud, which ends up with blood spilt in the street. Prince Escalus tries to prevent further conflicts betwe en the families by decreeing death for any individual who disturbs the peace. Meanwhile Romeo who doesnt really know what love is, thinks he is in love with this woman called Rosaline who doesnt return his affections.Lady Capulet on the other hand is trying to persuade Juliet to marry Paris a nobleman but all Juliet says is that she will have a look at him at the party. Mercutio, Romeo and his other friends arrive at the Capulets party and all of a sudden Romeo forgets about Rosaline as he sees a beautiful lady (Juliet)and falls in love with her. Meanwhile Tybalt, Juliets blood thirsty cousin sees Romeo and is enraged and plans revenge after the party. Romeo and Juliet kiss not even knowing each others names. Not long after Romeo asks Juliet to marry him and she agrees. They marry secretly because if anyone found out Juliet could be harmed. But Rome is drawn back into the feud when his best friend is killed. He kills Tybalt and is banished from Verona. He meets Juliet for one night of love but then leaves for Mantua.Juliet then faces a forced marriage to Count Paris. Feeling alone and abandoned she threatens to kill herself rather than betray Romeo. She goes to the priest who persuades her instead to take a potion that will make her seem dead in fortunately Romeo doesnt get the message explaining this and hears only that she has died. He returns and takes poison. When Juliet awakes she realises he is dead and cant face the world without him. She stabs herself. These deaths finally bring peace between the two families whos fighting has caused their childrens death.The main themes that run through the play Romeo and Juliet are: Love, hate and fate. The theme love is used all the way through the play, the Capulets and the Montagues really dislike each other and love is the cause of more violence. Romeo kills Tybalt out of love and guilt for his best friend Mercutio. Romeo says in the play that love has made him more of a girl than a man. In Juliets relationship w ith her parents love is not really shown as it should be, there is more cruelty and resentment than love which links their relationship closer to hate than love.The other theme that runs through the play is hate, this is probably the major theme. The Montagues and the Capulets absolutely hate each other, every time they come face to face with each other there is violence and Tybalt is mainly the one that stirs thing up. Hate is closely linked in Juliets relationship with her parents for example, Juliets mother Lady Capulet says to JulietI would the fool were in your grave.You can tell from this statement that Lady Capulets relationship with her daughter is not good. They also say to her.If you were mine I give you to my friend, if not die in the street.You can tell from this statement that the Capulets hate their daughter at this point, because that is not something that you would say to your own daughter.The final theme that is used a lot in the play is fate. We are told in the pro logue that Romeo and Juliet take their lives. William Shakespeares idea in the play is that fate uses Romeo and Juliet to punish their parents. In our key scene Act 3 Scene 1 Romeo calls on fate are killing Tybalt and says,I am fortunes fool.That statement tells the audience that fate is in control of the events.Love and hate run through the story. These themes are inter-related and this is shown in events such as the opening scene. The Capulets and the Montagues servants meet each other and fighting shows hatred but they also show love for their masters.The quarrel in between our masters and us their men.This shows that both the servants love their master and will do anything for them. They all most like football hooligans who fight because they love their team.Romeo is obsessed with love but doesnt really know what it is. He has a crush on a lady called Rosaline but when we listen to him describing his feeling they are very shallow.Shes fair I love.This shows that Romeo links love to looks more than to personality. He also says,She wont ope her lap to saint inducing gold.This quote show he links love with money instead of personality. Until he meets Juliet and talks to her that he falls for her personality as well as her looks.Act 3 Scene 1 is a important scene, it is a climatic scene of violence where love is the confronted by hate and afterwards things go wrong for the lovers. It also forms a climax in the structure. Up to this point Romeo and Juliet have being learning about what love is and now that they have found true love they think they can over come the hate between their families through their marriage, but from this point things go terribly wrong for the lover. They become, Fortunes fools and love turns to violence and hate. This scene begins the run to death the prologue had said.The opening scene Act 3 Scene 1 is used to create atmosphere for the audience. The audience knows Romeo and Juliet have got married but the other actors dont. This shows that dramatic irony is being used as love is suddenly changed to hate.For these hot days is the mad blood stirring. Benvolio warns the audience that blood will be spilt.The stage setting would probably be bright, all the characters would be acting nervous and sweating, the atmosphere would be full of tension and excitement because the audience knows that there is violent coming up in the performance.Mercutio is once again chatting, he is a character who is full of nervous energy, he is also very bright and entertaining, but Romeos best friend is supposed to make the audience feel uneasy because of the lack of control he has. Shakespeare would have probably get Mercutio this name because it is like mercury an unstable metal. He talks a lot about violence, death and fighting so that the audience knows that there is going to be violence coming up in the performance. Benvolio, Romeos peace making cousin tells us that Mercutio is apt to quarrel and that his life will not last very long if he keeps going on the way he is. That is ironic as Mercutio dies.When Tybalt arrives looking for Romeo who he has challenged. The tension in the atmosphere dramatically increases mostly because Mercutio is wanting to provoke Tybalt.Make it a word and a blow. he says to Tybalt when he asks if he could have a word with one of them. Mercutio might be looking to fight Tybalt but he might be acting his way out of love for his best friend Romeo. He thinks Romeo will not survive the fight with Tybalt. Mercutio has said that Romeo is already dead.Stabbed.his heart cleft with the blind bow boys butt shaft. This means that he has already been shot with an arrow of love and is not fit to fight. Ironically Mercutio has no idea that love for Juliet will kill Romeo in the end.Mercutio is at the point of duelling with Tybalt when Romeo arrives. Tybalt challenges Romeo not knowing that Romeo is now his cousin but Romeo refuses to fight, he controls his temper showing that as the Capulets said he is a well governed youth.Tybalt tries to insult Romeo by calling him a Villain and a Boy but he doesnt get the response he wanted of Romeo. He still refuses to fight and acts like a good loving friend. Romeo hints about his marriage to Juliet but doesnt speak to openly just in case he put Juliet at risk by sayingGood Capulet, whose l name I love to tender as dearly as my ownTybalt is fuming and frustrated in the Luhrmann film version of the play. He attacks Romeo who does absolutely nothing to defend himself. The other characters dont know Romeo motives. Mercutio is angry at what he is seeingVile submission Mercutio challenges Tybalt to defend his best friends honour, which was important in them days. Romeo tries his very best to stop the fight but as a result of that Mercutio dies.I was killed under your arm. Mercutio tells RomeoRomeo realises he bares the guilt of Mercutios death. Love hath made me effeminate.He is saying that love has made him more or a girl than a man and it ha s took this pride and courage away. He ceases to be well governed and as the priest warned in his speech about plants he lets rude will or hate take control. Romeo challenges Tybalt and ends up killing him but immediately knew that he had made the wrong decision.I am fortunes fool. he says dramatically, he realises fate had played a trick on him. If he had not acted out of hate Tybalt would had been executed because the Capulets wouldnt have been able to afford the blood price for the princes cousin. Romeo now realises that bringing peace back between the two families is now pretty impossible, this is prove when Juliets mother acting in the most unfeminine way, demanding his blood.Shakespeares plays are written mainly in blank verse. Blank verse has a regular rhythm but does not rhyme it is a very flexible medium, which is capable like the human speaking voice of a wide range of tones.Shakespeare used a particular form of blank verse called Iambic Pentameter.In Iambic Pentameter th e lines are ten syllables long. Each line is divided into pairs of syllables or feet. To help make the audience feel involved, i would stage the play outside so it makes the audience feel part of the cast as well. Mercutio and Tybalts fight is very different to Romeo and Tybalts. Mercutio and Tybalt are very skilled swords men and their fight is less violent and more like a dance. It becomes violent only when Mercutio died because Romeo interferes. On the other hand Romeo and Tybalts fight is extremely violent. Romeo is not a very skilled swords man so during the fight he uses props to protect himself rather than fight back. But both plan to kill not just wound, this is meant to frighten and horrify the audience.Even though Romeo and Juliet is over 400 years old. I think It is still valid to a modern audience because of the themes. The story of the two lovers from opposing families is used again and again. Rosie and Craig are examples of characters li ke Romeo and Juliet who appear in a soap called Coronation Street. Daz and Zoe a book read at school dealt with the same issues but set in Northern Ireland. In our modern multi-cultural society we can easily imagine the Romeo and Juliet story happening in real life. Children also often feel under pressure from t heir parents to line up to their wishes and ideals so we can still relate to the story Romeo and Juliet.The two versions of the play I have seen were on film, they were different: One was traditional (Franco Zefferlis) set in the 14th century, Italy. I liked the costumes they were beautiful and it helped me understand the historical context of the play. The other one was Baz Luhrmenns, it is set in modern day times in east coast America. The swords have been changed to guns but the language is the same. I enjoyed the modern version more because of the setting. I also understood the language better and the themes which had seem unfamiliar, I could suddenly relate it to parent s who want you to do something you dont want to .

Difference Between Atomic Weight and Atomic Mass Atomic weight and atomic mass are two important concepts in chemistry and physics. Many people use the terms interchangeably, but they dont actually mean the same thing. Take a look at the difference between atomic weight and atomic mass and understand why most people are confused or dont care about the distinction. (If youre taking a chemistry class, it could show up on a test, so pay attention!) Atomic Mass Versus Atomic Weight Uranium has two primordial isotopes (uranium-238 and uranium-235). Uranium-238 has 92 protons plus 146 neutrons and uranium-235 92 protons and 143 neutrons. Â  Pallava Bagla/Getty Images Atomic mass (ma) is the mass of an atom. A single atom has a set number of protons and neutrons, so the mass is unequivocal (wont change) and is the sum of the number of protons and neutrons in the atom. Electrons contribute so little mass that they arent counted. Atomic weight is a weighted average of the mass of all the atoms of an element, based on the abundance of isotopes. The atomic weight can change because it depends on our understanding of how much of each isotope of an element exists. Both atomic mass and atomic weight rely on the atomic mass unit (amu), which is 1/12th the mass of an atom of carbon-12 in its ​ground state. Can Atomic Mass and Atomic Weight Ever Be the Same? If you find an element that exists as only one isotope, then the atomic mass and the atomic weight will be the same. Atomic mass and atomic weight may equal each other whenever you are working with a single isotope of an element, too. In this case, you use the atomic mass in calculations rather than the atomic weight of the element from the periodic table. Weight Versus Mass: Atoms and More Mass is a measure of the quantity of a substance, while weight is a measure of how a mass acts in a gravitational field. On Earth, where we are exposed to a fairly constant acceleration due to gravity, we dont pay much attention to the difference between the terms. After all, our definitions of mass were pretty much made with Earth gravity in mind, so if you say a weight has a mass of 1 kilogram and a 1 weight of 1 kilogram, youre right. Now, if you take that 1 kg mass to the Moon, its weight will be less. So, when the term atomic weight was coined back in 1808, isotopes were unknown and Earth gravity was the norm. The difference between atomic weight and atomic mass became known when F.W. Aston, the inventor of the mass spectrometer (1927) used his new device to study neon. At that time, the atomic weight of neon was believed to be 20.2 amu, yet Aston observed two peaks in the mass spectrum of neon, at relative masses 20.0 amu and 22.0 amu. Aston suggested there two actually two types of neon atoms in his sample: 90% of the atoms having a mass of 20 amu and 10% with a mass of 22 amu. This ratio gave a weighted average mass of 20.2 amu. He called the different forms of the neon atoms isotopes. Frederick Soddy had proposed the term isotopes in 1911 to describe atoms that occupy the same position in the periodic table, yet are different. Even though atomic weight is not a good description, the phrase has stuck around for historical reasons. The correct term today is relative atomic mass - the only weight part of the atomic weight is that it is based on a weighted average of isotope abundance.

Today I am glad for the step I took some years back to sensitize my friends against racism. We have a group of multiracial students and we are doing great in the field. Our first step is to fight individualism. Tocqueville defines individualism as ‘calm and considered feeling which disposes each citizen to isolate himself from the mass of his fellows and withdraw into the circle of family and friends, with this little society formed to his task; he gladly leaves the greater society to look after itself’ (39). Film Editing Essay The 1972 film The Godfather directed by Francis Ford Coppolla based on the novel by Mario Puzo that takes one inside the world of the Mafia as shown in the Corleone family where its patriarch, Don Vito is the â€Å"Godfather† but later, the focus of the film would later on shift to his son Michael who at first was not part of the Mafia family, but later on gradually joined it until he became the Godfather. The rise of Michael Corleone from being a â€Å"civilian† to Godfather is made possible by a well-coordinated cinematography which also involves editing. Editing is a film technique where reels of film are subjected to â€Å"cut and paste† in order to weave the scenes into a seamless sequences of events that unfold the moment it hits the silver screen. In this film, the producers make use the continuous editing technique. This approach is employed for the purpose of maintaining continuous or clear narrative action. It begins with the scene when Michael arrives at his sister Connies wedding reception which is presided by their father Don Vito. This scene shows that Michael is not part of the other â€Å"family† his father leads as depicted by him dressed in a military uniform which showed he came from the war. The next scene would be the attempted â€Å"hit† (murder) of Don Vito in the market and a separate scene where Michaels older brother Sonny was killed. This is followed by the scene where he was mauled by corrupt police officers and another where he is handed a gun by his fathers mafiosi which he would use in a later scene to kill McCluskey, one of the corrupt cops and his fathers rival Sollozzo. His brothers death and later his father, has thrust him into becoming the head of the â€Å"Family† which is underscored by scenes showing the â€Å"hits† on rival mafia leaders while serving as the godfather of his sisters son. This is capped with the final scene where he closed the door to his study as he is about to preside over a â€Å"family† meeting with his second wife Kay standing by the doorway. These shots were cut and pasted in a way that it follows a progressive sequence. The seamlessness of the scenes shows rhythm in the editing and the intervals were either minimal or eliminated thereby preserving the momentum on focusing on Michael. The film also makes use of eye-line matches where the audience sees things initially from Don Vitos perspective, at the beginning and switching to Michael, as it is shown in numerous scenes especially his confrontation with Sollozzo and switches to his wife as shown in the final scene when the door to Michaels office closes with her looking on which underscored that Michael chose his other â€Å"family† thereby sealing his fate. The baptism scene shows the application of the temporal relationships as it is interspersed with the deaths of rival mafiosi, indicating what was happening at the same time. In conclusion, the use of (continuous) editing helped make the story of The Godfather easy to understand and to appreciate totally as it shows a seamless stringing of scenes that show the rise of Michael Corleone to power. Changes in Art History with Emphasis on the Mid-Twentieth Century Art during the mid-twentieth century contained some of the most important changes art history. These explosive times were counter-balanced with explosive popular culture. More historical events, abrupt changes, and turbulence occurred from the end of World War II until the height of the Vietnam War than in any time period. Before this time, styles of art had lasted generations. In the 1960’s numerous important art movements were happening at the same time. There were variations on variations, movements inside of other movements. Therefore, because of the amount of independent and integrated pieces of movements and styles, a lot can be missed in a short paper. The amount that happened in these twenty-five years is enough to fill volumes, and so, this is just a brief scraping off the top of what during these times—the most tumultuous times in American History. INTRODUCTION: The 1940’s through the 1960’s were not only some of the most socially and politically volatile times in American History, but were the catalyst for the numerous changes in which occurred in American Popular culture during these and following years. Instead of experiencing the trauma which resulted after World War I’s end, post-World War II United States returned fairly easily back to everyday life. Although there were some problems converting from a wartime to a peacetime economy in the late 1940’s, Americans took on the task and entered the 1950’s on a very auspicious high note. During the time period after World War II, the United States experienced many changes. Technology was abundant and the rate at which new inventions, industries and technologies came about was at a rate never seen before. From a television in every home to the first computers and ultimately space flight, these two decades after World War II were crowded with advancements. S ome of the most dramatic changes came in the field of art. What was once a single, slow road of popular culture advancement branched off into thousands of smaller, faster changing roads. Some of these â€Å"roads†, which can be seen as changing styles, or movements, in art, whipped Americans through a roller coaster of change in what they saw around them. The End of World War II: The major art movement taking place in the United States directly after World War II was... ...ther in their concept. So as we start in a new millenium, we have to ask ourselves what will be the next great movement in art? Could there be anything again as influential as the times that existed here? Queen Hatshepsut Mike Tyson – January 24, 2012 Prof John Jones – Humanities 111 Summary The mystery behind the rule and death of Queen Hatshepsut, it was believed that Queen Hatshepsut dressed as a man to gain support of the Egyptians. During her reign she created wealth for Egypt by trading goods and oversaw building projects. Her reign was peaceful without war and was considered very successful. Upon Hatshepsut death, her successor Thutmose III removed as many remnants of her rule as possible by defacing monuments and removing her name from the kings’ lists. The theories were she was killed by Thutmose III, accidently committed suicide or died of natural causes. Her remains were not identified until 2007, although British Howard Carter had discovered the remains in 1902 in Egypt’s Valley of Kings. Queen hatshepsut Queen Hatshepsut, daughter of Thutmose and Aahmes, was one of the few female pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. There were other female pharaohs previously, but none had the unprecedented impact she had during her reign. She gained her title as the 5th Pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty of Egypt, her reign was approximately 21 years. Hatshepsut, the elder daughter of the 18th-dynasty king Thutmose I and his consort Ahmose, was married to her half brother Thutmose II, son of the lady Mutnofret. Since three of Mutnofret's older sons had died prematurely, Thutmose II inherited his father's throne about 1492, with Hatshepsut as his consort. Hatshepsut bore one daughter, Neferure, but no son. When her husband died about 1479, the throne pas sed to his son Thutmose III, born to Isis, a lesser harem queen. As Thutmose III was an infant, Hatshepsut acted as regent for the young king. † (1) For the first few years of ther stepson’s reign, Hatshepsut has acted as guardian performing pharaoh-like duties on Thutmose III’s behalf. After performing the duties for approximately seven years she was crowned king and received full royal duties as a pharaoh. Hatshepsut and Thutmose III became co-rulers of Egypt, with Hatshepsut viewed as the dominant king. She assumed all of the royal privileges and symbols of a King, even dressed in similar attire s a male. During her reign â€Å"established the trade networks that had been disrupted during the Hyksos occupation of Egypt during the Second Intermediate Period, thereby building the wealth of the eighteenth dynasty. † (2) While creating the trade network she created wealth for Egypt Hatshepsut was also a builder. She was responsible for restoring and building as a part of her royal duties the most noted was the Dayr al-bar temple her funeral monument. She led construction projects throughout Upper and Lower Egypt. Her reign was illustrious and peaceful â€Å"†¦Egyptian kings defended their land against the enemies who lurked at Egypt’s borders. Hatshepsut’s reign was essentially a peaceful one, and her foreign policy was based on trade rather than war. † (3) Towards the end of her reign, she started to give Thutmose III more royal power as king. During her reign Egypt prospered, economic problems were few and trade flourished. Missing the Target

This article is written to the general public.   It is begging the question, how do we close the gap? The school district or town of Ossining is struggling to get to the root of the great racial divide. However, the bigger question, is it race, is the real issue.   Is it socioeconomic or an even greater issue at hand?   The values stressed in this article are of education, equality and integration. The author whole-heartedly believes that the great racial divide is what hinders many African-American and Latino students.   The author also points out that the students have benefited from the integration and provides examples in the article of said benefits. Let us examine the points a little further. The article asks the question, ‘can the town continue to use racial targeting to close the achievement gap?’ Is that what is going on? According to the article, ‘†they're doing a lot of things, but it's not clear that they're working.†Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ He (Noguera) says the results of his research are forthcoming.   Pedro Noguera is a New York University sociologists and nationally known expert in the achievement gap (Goldstein). He does not see how this is helping but gives the school an A for effort.   However, effort alone does not achieve results, especially in this instance.   I do not see the efforts of Ossining as an academic achievement, but as a social one. It is irrelevant as to whether I agree with the values of the article, although I do. However, the values of integration do not solve the problems of the educational divide, which is the point or thesis of the article.   What is stressed here is how African-Americans do better in the workforce when they are put in integrated environments and pregnancy rates are lowered for Latina and African-American teenagers, but what does that have to do with education? The sociological gap presented here is really what is being questioned.   However, that is not achieving equality in higher education. Programs such as the Boy Scouts of America or summer enrichment programs can achieve integration or exposure to a less segregated social experience.   The question in the article is about closing the achievement gap and that is not being addressed or answered in this article. The author values integration, equal opportunity, enrichment exposure and self-esteem.   However, if the parents of the affluent are the only ones involved, then there will only be a social integration.   Achievement comes from involvement and reinforcement at home.   There are few children that can achieve anything with parents who cannot understand and assist in homework or academic endeavors.   That is discouraging.   My take on it is to target parents and to teach them about what good study habits are.   It does not matter if the children are being targeted if it is not reinforced at home. There are only a minute amount of children that can make achievements in dire circumstances.   If the parents are telling the children to work hard or that they need them to get a job to help out with bills and other extenuating circumstances, such things can and will deter academic achievement.   There are statistics that show parents that read have children that read.   The emphasis on education starts at home and if there is a sociological disadvantage, then that is what needs to be addressed and resolved since, obviously, such efforts as in the Ossining school are missing the target; educational equality.

If whether or not a few cells could be considered a human or not, Dr Hodgson was more concerned with the mother than a few cells in the body which would have let to life. The difficult life a baby with birth defects would have to live with it and the troubles the family would have to go through dealing with the child. Counter Argument: Against Minnesota law. Judgment: Chief Judge Edward J. Devitt, Judge Charles J. Vogel, along with Judge Philip Neville split 2-1. Judge Vogel dissented without leaving behind an opinion. While the other two judges verdict indicted Dr. Hodgson. The United States Supreme Court denied the appeal, because they did not want to interfere with a subject such as abortion. After the case of Roe v. Wade Dr. Hodgsons indictment was reversed. Holding: The state supreme courts Judges were strict Catholics making their opinion tainted. The state believed federal judges shouldnt interfere with state decisions. Roe v. Wade proves that a right to a womans privacy "is broad enough to encompass a woman's decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy." Why we created Emphasis 360 Why we created Emphasis 360 Our courses are transformative. Its the norm for participants to leave the training room full of confidence and buzzing with ideas. Were calling it Emphasis 360, and it will make good writing a strong, permanent habit in the people who report to you. It will embed the writing skills that your people learn on our in-company courses – to make them permanent – and it will teach them new ones. It will create confident business writers and develop them into highly skilled communicators. And it will do this without straining your budget or taking up hours of study time that your team simply dont have. Sounds great, you say, but how are you going to do that? Read on to find out. Weekly, interactive learning sessions All members of Emphasis 360 will have access to a website dedicated to developing their writing skills. In other words, well be covering the full range of learning styles, so that everyone can study and learn effectively. Your team will also be able to track their progress – as will you. Global better-writing resource library Week by week, well be adding special support resources to the exclusive members site. The resource library will include best-practice checklists, how-to guides and great-looking templates.
